During good times, countless people become friends, whereas the one who is a friend during bad times is truly a friend.

The sanskrit word for friend is 'mitratva'. The presence of certain qualities makes friendship a special relationship. A friend is not afraid to give an honest opinion and does not say things for the sake of approval. A friend willingly shares his thoughts and feelings without being overly critical or condescending. There is no room for pride, jealousy, or rivalry.

During difficult economic times, it is easy to retreat within oneself, to form a cocoon so as not to be affected by our fellow man's hardships. But now is the time to open our hands and hearts, to help those in need. For it is in difficult times that one's true character is revealed. Let us gather at our temple to comfort and be comforted.
